I've been monitoring the migration patterns of hipsters for almost 10 years. Circa 2006, they began their eastward gentrification in the neighborhood of Bushwick. It was then that I created the life-sized dollhouse of waste. That projekt began my engagement with enlightenment. Seeking detachment from the creative process became my discipline. Ethereal whispers, beyond the scope of cosmic consciousness, cherry-blossomed into F.O.A.M. the Found Objects Art Museum. Right action at the right time.
More recently , more than twice, I was interviewed on the streets of Barcelona solely because of my resemblance to that of a hipster. Acceptance of this international faux pas later resulted with the opening of my crown chakra. Buddhist mantras, youtube meditation music and appropriated electronic waste shined the light of a thousand-petaled lotus on my designs everlasting.
2012 Sant Cugat de Valle, KELVINMCCANNIX was launched in the garage of a Catalán villa overlooking the rolling hills of southern Spain. With ironically, Vishuda.es, as my first client. The offbeat namesake design showroom refers to Vishuddha, the fifth (sound) chakra which deals with communication, creativity and learning to take responsibility for one's own needs.
Designing in Europe summer of 2013, I met a pirate Harry who seized a shipment of illegal e-waste being exported to Africa. Africa's biggest electronics wasteland, Agbogbloshie, is a global e-waste hotspot where Ghanaian orphans, boys and young men, die from cancer in their 20s. Injuries, such as burns, untreated wounds, eye damage, lung and back problems, go hand in hand with chronic nausea, anorexia, debilitating headaches and respiratory problems. 200kg of his bouty found it's way into KELVINMCCANNIX installation art.
Harry, also a yogini, who fled the UK in the trunk of a Mercedes-Benz once said, the brain is an electrical machine. Nothing but a machine. Damaged, the brain produces waste electrical currents which are your dreams and delusions. You have a dirty mind.
As many studies show, a regular meditation practice offers numerous health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, and releasing stress and fatigue. Studies also show how sound can alter the state of the mind. Light music can create a peaceful sensation while loud and distorted sound can be the cause for irritation and disrupt the natural state of the mind. There are many guided meditations that use sounds of waterfalls, babbling brooks, or ocean waves to help the binaural rhythms of the body.
